Self-esteem is a fundamental aspect of our mental and emotional well-being. It shapes our self-worth, our self-confidence, and how we perceive ourselves. Maintaining a healthy level of self-esteem is essential for leading a fulfilling life.
As a coach, I regularly engage with clients, across all sectors and levels therein, who are challenged by a poor self-esteem.
Here are five tools that you can use to build or maintain a healthy self-esteem.
Be Appreciative – A key foundation of self-esteem is appreciating yourself. Take time to acknowledge your achievements, both big and small. Celebrate your successes, including your small wins, and recognize your efforts. By focusing on your accomplishments and your efforts, you reinforce a positive self-image and remind yourself of your capabilities.
Challenge your inner critic – Let’s be honest, we all have that inner voice that can be overly critical at times. To maintain self-esteem, it’s crucial to challenge this inner critic. When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, pause and question the validity of those thoughts. Ask yourself would you allow someone else to talk to you like this. Replace this self-criticism with self-compassion and self-acknowledgement for what you have achieved.
Know who you are and what you want to be – Self-esteem thrives when you have a strong sense of self-identity and purpose. Take the time to reflect on your values, beliefs, and your goals. Write them down. Understanding who you are and what you want from life empowers you to make choices that align with your authentic self, reinforcing your self-esteem.
Do the best you can at that moment in time – Perfectionism can be a significant blow to self-esteem. Instead of striving for perfection, focus on doing your best at any given moment. Understand that making mistakes is a part of being human. Mistakes don’t define you but merely teach you what doesn’t work. Embracing a growth mindset allows you to learn and grow from your experiences.
Enjoy positive relationships and eliminate negative ones – The people you surround yourself with can have a huge impact on your self-esteem. Nurture relationships with those who uplift and support you. Seek out individuals who appreciate your worth and encourage your growth. At the same time, consider distancing yourself from negative relationships that undermine your self-esteem.
Maintaining healthy self-esteem is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness and deliberate effort. By applying these five tools you can build and maintain a strong sense of self-worth. Remember that self-esteem is not about being flawless; it’s about recognizing your inherent value as a unique and capable person.
