Don’t Fall Into the Complacency Trap
A client recently shared with me a painful experience: she’d missed out on a senior promotional opportunity.
On paper, she was highly qualified and experienced. But when asked in the interview, “What have you done in the past two years to develop yourself?” — she struggled.
She spoke about consolidating and building on her existing skillset, but couldn’t point to any specific step she’d taken. That gap proved a game-changing moment.
The Complacency Trap
In our coaching session, she admitted that she had become complacent. She assumed her qualifications would carry her into the senior role. But while those credentials were impressive, they were now three years behind her.
Yes, she used them daily in her role, but she had not invested in new growth. She thought she was safe.
Leaders Stay Ready
True leaders prepare themselves for the opportunities they know will come. They invest daily in their own growth.
They read.
They learn.
They push themselves beyond the comfort zone.
They lodge new skills, insights, and perspectives into a “deposit account” they can draw from when opportunities arrive. That might be:
A new language
An advanced technical or IT skill
Developing emotional intelligence
Finally pursuing that MBA
Whatever the area, the time to start is now.
Set Your Development Goals
As autumn approaches and a new academic season begins, it’s the perfect time to reflect. What one meaningful development goal could you set for yourself in the coming year?
My client has already committed. She’s going to actively build her skillset so that next time, she won’t be caught off guard. She’ll be ready.
She’s learned the lesson.
The question is — what will you do?
