Yesterday in Ireland we entered the second Covid-19 lockdown which is scheduled to last 6 weeks. Some of my clients contacted me looking for suggestions to help them, their teams or businesses to deal with this lockdown. They feel frustrated, scared, uncertain and simply wanted to discuss how they can coach themselves, or their teams, to deal with the current lockdown.
Change the mind-set…be a leader of your own wellbeing
The first thing one needs to understand is that you can choose at the outset of the lockdown (or any time indeed) to be a leader of your own wellbeing rather than a passive consumer of health care. The passive consumer listens to the news feeds and social media on a regular basis and absorbs this information to compound their frustrations, fears and uncertainty. They feel victimised, powerless and uncomfortable in their reaction to the uncertainty of this change.
Choose to be a leader….
The converse of these victims are the people who choose to be leaders of their own wellbeing.
Leaders realise that they have the power to choose. They choose to take responsibility for the areas they can control. They make small positive changes on a daily basis which strengthen their mind set. This in turn improves their mental, physical and emotional health allowing them to emerge from the Lockdown stronger. They respond to this change and see it as an opportunity to do things differently.
Change the question you ask yourself…
Rather than ask themselves what have I lost, leaders ask themselves how can I grow.
Leaders realise, that in order to grow, we must leave our comfort zones. This is their opportunity to adapt and grow. Look globally at the many companies who have embraced this philosophy and thrived.
So as you face the uncertainty of the next few weeks, ask yourself the question how will I grow.
List three or four process goals you will set for yourself that will strengthen your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing over the coming weeks.
Commit to these every day, review this commitment every day and accept no excuses!
